Gary Gardner has announced his retirement from professional football, bringing an end to a career that saw him represent both Birmingham City and Aston Villa during his time in the game.
The 34-year-old revealed his decision through an extended social media post, coming 15 months after his departure from Cambridge United, his most recent club.
Throughout his career, Gardner amassed 328 appearances across the Championship, Premier League, FA Cup, and League Cup competitions. His final appearance came in April 2024, during a 3-0 victory against Coventry City at St Andrew’s, a stadium close to his heart.
He netted 27 goals during his time in the Championship. Among these, the most memorable arrived while playing for Villa, when he found the net against Birmingham in a 1-1 stalemate at St Andrew’s in October 2016. His final professional goal came seven years later, a remarkable free-kick strike that helped Birmingham secure a 3-1 triumph over West Brom.
Gardner spent five seasons with Birmingham, the club he had supported since childhood. In his statement, he described achieving his childhood ambition of playing in the Premier League as meaning everything to him. He expressed how representing his country at various youth levels had filled him with pride, and how pulling on the Birmingham shirt made those moments even more significant.
He reflected on the privilege of sharing the pitch with outstanding teammates, noting that such memories would remain with him permanently. Gardner acknowledged that injuries had plagued him early in his career, sometimes leaving him uncertain about whether he would play again. However, he explained how these difficult periods taught him valuable lessons about recovery, determination, and maintaining the correct attitude.
Gardner expressed gratitude to his parents for their unwavering support throughout his journey, thanking them for their endless love, encouragement, and the countless miles they travelled to watch him play. He also thanked his wife Lacey and his children Romeo and Gigi, stating they provided him with the motivation to persist through challenging moments and create treasured family memories.
He extended appreciation to club owners, teammates, supporters, managers, coaching staff, medical professionals, and those working behind the scenes who rarely receive adequate recognition. Gardner acknowledged his brothers and close friends for their constant encouragement throughout his career.
Looking ahead, Gardner announced his excitement about beginning a new role with M+C Saatchi Football, a player agency boasting five decades of combined expertise across sport, law, media, and marketing sectors. He expressed enthusiasm about using his experience to guide and support other players in developing both their football abilities and personal growth.
