Aston Villa player ratings: Three stars land 8s after 3-2 win at Tottenham

Aston Villa recorded their first Premier League victory of the campaign, defeating Tottenham 3-2 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The result extended Villa’s strong run under Unai Emery, while Spurs were left to reflect on a frustrating afternoon in north London.

Zion Suzuki was instrumental in ensuring Villa reached the interval with a clean sheet intact.

The Japan international produced four saves in the opening 20 minutes alone, denying Savio on three separate occasions.

After blocking two reflex efforts from the Brazilian winger, Suzuki adjusted his body to turn Archie Gray’s strike wide of the post shortly after the Spurs man had come on for the injured Pedro Porro.

Suzuki then pushed a Savio volley away before being called into action again when Tyrone Mings overhit a back-pass, only for the goalkeeper to recover and prevent a self-inflicted concession.

Villa’s first opportunity arrived in the 27th minute when Nicolas Jackson and Emi Buendia linked up on the left flank, with the latter striking an angled effort at Antonin Kinsky.

Shortly before the break, Tottenham defender Van de Ven required treatment on the sidelines after taking a blow to the head, allowing Villa to seize momentum.

Following an Andy Robertson clearance that fell short inside his own area, John McGinn laid the ball to Boubacar Kamara, who steered it into the path of Johan Manzambi, and the youngster applied a calm finish in first-half stoppage time to mark his full debut with a goal.

Tottenham believed they had equalised on the hour mark when substitute Mohamed Kudus converted from close range, but Robertson, who had supplied the cross, was clearly in an offside position and the strike was ruled out following a VAR review.

Villa then extended their advantage in the 67th minute through Jackson, who brought the ball under control before firing a bouncing effort across Kinsky from just inside the box.

The contest appeared beyond Spurs six minutes from time when Buendia added a superb third, curling a stunning strike past the goalkeeper.

Conor Gallagher reduced the arrears in the 86th minute with a flick off Matty Cash, and Jan Paul van Hecke headed in a second in the seventh minute of stoppage time, but the comeback came too late for the hosts.
