Aston Villa’s 2026/27 campaign began in disastrous fashion as they slumped to a heavy defeat on the south coast, with their new acquisition dismissed for aggressive behaviour.
Emery’s men created the first openings, yet without a recognised forward available, Buendia squandered an excellent early opportunity after Barkley had won possession high up the pitch.
That miss proved decisive, as Brighton found the net four times before the 32nd minute.
Torres was responsible for a catastrophic pass across the penalty area that allowed De Cuyper to seize the ball and fire towards goal, with the strike hitting the upright and bouncing in off Lindelof.
Rutter then supplied the assist for Brighton’s second goal 18 minutes in, before the home side accelerated away from Villa entirely with two rapid strikes approaching the interval.
Hinshelwood rose to head home a third after Maatsen had been beaten at the far post, then doubled his tally shortly after when Ayari won the ball from Gomes.
Following a disastrous opening period, Villa became only the second Premier League side in history to concede four goals, receive a dismissal and concede an own goal before half-time, joining Southampton’s match against Manchester United from February 2021.
Marco Bizot
The Villa goalkeeper was beaten four times in 31 minutes, with the visitors fortunate not to trail by an even greater margin at the break. Bizot produced several decent saves after the restart. Rating: 4

Cash was unable to prevent what would have been a fifth goal late in the first half. Failed to cut out the cross that resulted in Brighton’s third goal. Rating: 4
Victor Lindelof
De Cuyper escaped his marker far too readily for Brighton’s second, the wing-back converting Rutter’s delivery. Rating: 4
Pau Torres
Torres endured an early nightmare, permitting De Cuyper to score after a dreadful pass across the area. He was exposed again in the 23rd minute from range, allowing Rutter a shooting chance. Failed to prevent Rutter’s cross for the second goal. Rating: 3
Ian Maatsen
Maatsen delivered a reasonable ball across the six-yard area early on, though nobody was positioned to convert. He was outmuscled at the back post for Brighton’s third goal. Rating: 4
Boubacar Kamara
An afternoon to forget for everyone, including Kamara, who was making his first Premier League appearance since January. Rating: 4
Joao Gomes
A nightmare introduction to English football. There were very few ways Gomes could have had a worse opening period. After receiving an early caution, he also surrendered possession for Brighton’s fourth and was sent off for violent conduct. He did carry the ball forward a couple of times between Brighton’s goals. Rating: 2
John McGinn
McGinn struck over the bar with an attempt in the 16th minute, having been supplied by Gomes. Won five tackles and played five passes into the attacking third. Rating: 5
Ross Barkley
Barkley operated in an unrestricted role with Villa missing a centre-forward. He seized the ball high up the pitch early to set Buendia up with a significant chance, though Buendia failed to take it. Rating: 4
George Hemmings
Hemmings made his first Premier League start, playing on the left flank. A tough assignment for the young player to make an impression. He gave his all and covered plenty of ground. Rating: 5
Emi Buendia
Buendia passed up a golden chance to score early in the first half – the match could have unfolded very differently had he finished. He worked hard once Villa were reduced to ten men. Rating: 5
