Former striker Ally McCoist has warned Aston Villa supporters they should be worried about Unai Emery’s position after witnessing the damage done to his roster during the recent transfer period. The Midlands club have seen numerous important players depart, among them Ezri Konsa, Youri Tielemans, Lucas Digne and Morgan Rogers, with further exits potentially on the horizon for Ollie Watkins and Emi Martínez over the next few days.
With less than ten days until the transfer window shuts, Villa will require multiple additions to their squad if further sales are permitted. Their campaign began with a heavy 4-0 reversal at Brighton on Sunday, with the home side scoring all their goals inside the opening half-hour before João Gomes was dismissed for striking Georginio Rutter.
McCoist expressed sympathy for the club on talkSPORT Breakfast, describing the situation as chaotic. He highlighted the significant departures of key players like Tielemans, Digne, Rogers, and Konsa. He noted that Watkins appears to have made his decision and is likely to follow the money to Saudi Arabia.
The former Rangers forward observed that the squad has been stripped of its strength. He acknowledged that the team performed creditably in the Super Cup final against PSG, with Hemmings and Madjo catching the eye, suggesting some cause for optimism. However, after witnessing Sunday’s events, he believes Villa fans have genuine reasons to be alarmed about the direction the club is heading.
He admitted he would be deeply concerned about the potential situation regarding the manager, questioning at what point Emery might ask himself what the point of continuing is.
